Since its charter on March 16, 1999 the Kiwanis Club of Tellico Village
has participated in a Kiwanis International major emphasis program
called Young Children: Priority One, by supporting the local Parents
Acting as Children's Teachers (PACT) program in the Lenoir City school
system by preparing and distributing learning materials to parents
of kindergarten children for home use. In partnership with the
Tellico Village Woodworker’s Club,
our club constructed a “Children’s Corner” in
the Good Samaritan Center located in Lenoir City.
In
partnership with the Loudon County Health Improvement Council and
Covenant Health, Kiwanians have distributed free “Child Safety Kits”
throughout the county, participated in the “Family Affair,”
provided financial support to children needing assistance for
clothes and school supplies to begin the new school year.
A
Key Club has been formed at the Loudon County High School.
Key Clubs are a Kiwanis International Sponsored Youth Program
that is intended to provide young adults an opportunity to develop
civic, social, and leadership skills while working on community
projects designed to help those in need.
The club
has also prepared and distributed (in partnership
with local pharmacies) “Vials for Life” -- intended for individuals
who depend on prescription medication to identify those medications
by placing their list of medications in prescription vials and
storing them in their refrigerator, which will bear an identifying
symbol. The vial will then help emergency response teams to identify
critical medication information should they need to respond to an
emergency call at an individual’s residence.
We
are also long-standing partners with the Child Advocacy Center (CAC) and the
Good
Samaritan Center, and support field trips for local school
classes.
Future
projects, in addition to a continuation of those already mentioned,
will include a collaborative effort with the Health Education
Alliance of Loudon (HEAL) and Covenant Health to provide
incentives to parents of young children to seek prenatal and
postnatal care for young children through the age of 5 years.
