Spring 2007

The Prom Photo Tradition

Prom 2007 The first stop on prom night - April 28 - for many students.

The UT Arboretum is truly a place for all seasons and all reasons! A tradition for many of the Oak Ridge High School classes is to assemble for a "photo shoot" at the Arboretum before the annual prom. This year's class was treated with perfect weather for the event.

The 2007 Annual Plant Sale

2007 Plant Sale Beautiful weather + beautiful plants = a perfect event!

Plant Sale attendees were greeted with beautiful weather - and a wide variety of beautiful plants - at this annual event sponsored by the UT Arboretum Society. This year's sale, held on April 21, 2007, featured Viburnums.

"Looking for Signs of Spring" - Ramble

SpringRamble Jeff Holt, tour leader, discusses the characteristics of the Cornus Mas Dogwood.

On March 10, 2007, early morning "ramblers" explored the forests, trails, and plant collections of the UT Arboretum with forester, plantsman, and UT Arboretum Society Board Member, Jeff Holt, in search of the first signs of spring. They learned clues to identifying trees and shrubs without their leaves, saw the first blooms of spring, and the tell-tale signs of the emerging spring season.

"Pruning with the Pros" - Workshop

PruningWorkshop1 Workshop participants toured the Arboretum's Urban Forestry Pruning Demonstration site.

A "Hands-On" Workshop for homeowners and landscape professionals was held on March 10, 2007 at the Arboretum. Participants got tips from five "Pros" and learned how to properly prune trees and shrubs... why tree-topping hurts... and much more! The "Pros": Sam Adams, Certified Arborist, Cortese Tree Specialists, Inc.; Neal Denton, UT Extension Agent and County Director; Richard Evans, Certified Forester, UT Arboretum Director; Tom Simpson, Certified Arborist, TN Division of Forestry, Urban Forester; David Vandergriff, Certified Arborist, UT Extension Specialist, Urban Forestry.

PruningWorkshop2 "Pros" Neal Denton and David Vandergriff show pruning techniques to a "full house" in the Program Shelter.

The Ramble and the Pruning Workshop were sponsored by the University of Tennessee Arboretum Society. For more information about the Society visit www.utarboretumsociety.org
