This collection of redbuds (Cercis canadensis) along Arboretum Drive below the Program Shelter was initially planted in 1995 with objectives to (1) identify the fastest growing trees in eastern Tennessee, (2) study variability in ornamental characteristics, and (3) establish genetic conservation plantings of the species. Seeds were collected from Tennessee, Illinois, Arkansas, Indiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Kentucky, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Seedlings were grown in containers for 2 years before planting. Unfortunately the initial planting failed, but the survivors were recovered and replanted in their present location.
In 2007, a new study of redbuds was initiated with the planting of Chinese Redbud (Cercis chinensis) cultivars, plus cultivars of C. canadensis - Forest Pansy, Lavendar Twist, Covey Weeping Redbud - C. canadensis texensis - Texas White, Rubye Atkinson Pink Redbud - and C. gigantea - Giant Redbud. The objective of this new study is to evaluate genetic variation in Chinese redbud and eastern redbud cultivars from a northern source for potential introduction to East Tennessee.
