Become a Volunteer Trail Ranger!

Trail Ranger Badge

We are looking for volunteers who love the Arboretum tails, and would like to help us maintain and improve the trails system. We will provide the tools and all the necessary training in trail maintenance, as well as inform you of the many special features of each trail. This is a great way to help the Arboretum - on your own time - and make new friends!

Volunteer Trail Ranger Duties Description

  • Attend one orientation/training session at the UT Arboretum.
  • Assist in providing directions and help to visitors if needed while you are on the grounds.
  • Monitor Arboretum trails and grounds for maintenance needs or potential hazards.
  • If maintenance needs are identified, document them in the provided logbook for the attention of fellow Rangers.
  • If time and health allow, use provided tools from the Trail Ranger shed to reduce or remove hazards, also documenting work done in the logbook and returning tools after use.
  • Notify Arboretum staff if you feel that maintenance needs are more than you are able to take care of.
  • Return used tools to their place after use.
  • As the Trail Ranger program develops, other needs may be identified by the Arboretum including: developing signs and interpretive materials, installing markers, etc.

*Remember, this is on your OWN TIME, and you are never required to do any trail maintenance that you are not comfortable with. We only ask that you use the logbook on a regular basis in documenting trail conditions to aid other volunteers and Arboretum staff in knowing trail maintenance needs.
