The Florence Crittenton Agency provides a comprehensive residential program for young women in crisis or at risk -- mental health counseling, medical education and care, parenting education, academic education, and milieu therapy within a nurturing environment. Some of the clients are pregnant or new mothers with their infants; others are adolescents who cannot live with their families for various reasons (many of them have been in the custody of the State because of severe child abuse and neglect). The peaceful, secure facilities of the FCA are the perfect environment for starting again.
Although Westminster supports FCA financially, there are many other ways to get involved. The organization needs volunteers to work one-on-one with a young woman as a mentor and friend; a couple of hours a week can really make a difference in the life of one person who needs such care and attention. Another way to get involved is to help sponsor an event and create some community-building activities: a Christmas party (or some other kind of party) is a wonderful way to raise morale and have some fun; or perhaps you can help teach a life-skills class like quilting or money management.
