ADD/ADHD Symposium Photos

A WWN Event   ~  September 20, 2003



More than 50 parents, education professionals, and area wellness practitioners took time on sunny Saturday, September 20th to attend a day-long symposium "Focus on ADD/ADHD - Complementary and Alternative Approaches".

The event was presented by The Greater Knoxville Area Chapter of the Wholistic Wellness Network, Inc. (WWN) at the Mary Blount Elementary School in Maryville, Tennessee.

Presenters and Presentations

Suzanne Jonas, a local WWN Chapter President kicked off the symposium with opening remarks and an informative background on ADD/ADHD.  Suzanne does presentations around the world on the effects of music and sound for learning, productivity, and healing; and later in the day gave a presentation on the use of Sound and Music therapies for the treatment of ADD/ADHD.  Suzanne also discussed the 'Mozart Effect', brain synchronization, and recent research on the use of specific frequencies in classrooms to decrease fatigue and restlessness and enhance focus and learning.

Dr. Pete Sulack practices chiropractic medicine at Exodus Chiropractic in Knoxville.  He gave a lively and informative presentation on the role the nervous system plays in disease and health, highlighted some pitfalls to a drug-oriented approach to ADD/ADHD treatment, and discussed case-studies and personal experiences regarding chiropractic diagnosis and care and other alternative treatments.

Barbara Rose Barbara Rose got attendees to their feet and led us through a series of Brain Gym® movements that help to enhance brain connections, facilitate stress reduction, stimulate the sensorimotor system and promote calm organization throughout the brain and body.

Diane

Diane Minch and Carol Montgomery are both independent natural wellness consultants as well as being co-directors of different Knoxville-area WWN chapters.  Together they presented a comprehensive potpourri of practical tips, products, and solutions for avoiding and eliminating environmental toxins, heavy metals, food additives, and allergens associated with ADD/ADHD.   They provided suggestions for dietary changes and improved nutrition and had related products available for sampling.

Carrie Wagner, Director of Knoxville Reflexology Group, combines her work with essential oils and other alternative modalities in helping people overcome chronic conditions and pain.  She gave a presentation on the need for Detoxifications to address the toxic side effects of Vaccinations and discussed an approach to treat those effects.

Piotr Ulmer, a clinical Physical Therapy instructor and practitioner, presented information on Manual Manipulation and Integrative Manual Therapy.   He also discussed the cranio-sacral system and related therapies that can help reduce ADD symptoms.   Piotr also described Integrative Diagnostics and its ability and use in diagnosing the roots of problems and symptoms of ADD and in identifying cases that are not ADD.

Patricia Holst and Holly White, two Interactive Metronome Certified professionals with Educational Associates in Oak Ridge explained and demonstrated the use of Interactive Metronome®.  Volunteers among the attendees participated.

Interactive Metronome® rhythmic and movement training exercises have been shown to improve motor planning and coordination for children and adults.  IM training can also help enhance focus and learning, and can provide  improvements in attention, coordination, control of aggression/impulsivity, reading and language processing.

Sandra Bonkosky, a Certified Color Practitioner and Teacher, discussed how the use of color and light can benefit those with ADD/ADHD.  Sandra also described effective techniques and recent research involving color  and light that can be used to improve attention, coordination, communication, and learning.

Fibromyalgia & Heart Disease Symposium (Nov 2003)

The Wholistic Wellness Network (WWN) is a national nonprofit organization that exists to integrate complementary, alternative, and conventional medicine at both the community and the institutional levels.   The Knoxville Area Chapter serves nine East Tennessee counties and hosts fun and informational meetings each month around the area.   The national organization produces a quarterly publication entitled Connections and locally you might enjoy the WWN East Tennessee Newsletter which is mailed to local members monthly.
